Helium isn't manufactured — it's captured as a byproduct when certain natural gas fields are processed, and only a handful of places on Earth do this at meaningful scale. Qatar is one of the largest single sources in the world, supplying roughly a third of the global market on its own.
Earlier this year, the facility that processes most of that Qatari helium was damaged, and a key regional shipping route became largely unusable. Between the two, a significant share of the world's helium supply disappeared almost overnight. Industry analysts tracking the situation describe it as the most severe helium shortage on record — and recovery has been slow.
Why this one feels different
Helium shortages aren't new — this is actually the fourth or fifth global squeeze in the last twenty years. In the past, a government-held helium reserve could step in and soften the impact when supply tightened. That reserve was sold to a private company back in 2024, so there's no longer a backstop absorbing the shock the way there used to be. Prices are swinging harder, and recovering more slowly, than in past shortages.
